Back in the day health clubs were gyms-small facilities with the owner and his dog normally on site. Members were greeted with an upbeat hello and a “see you next time” good-bye. The facilities were manned by one or two teenagers who spent the majority of their time cleaning the equipment and answering member’s questions.  The owner, who was normally an ex-athlete,  seemed concerned about everyone.  “How was your day?” and “How is your workout program coming along?”.  Everyone who needed help was helped. Normally for free.Somewhere along the way owners/managers became paid trainers since that’s where the money was. If you wanted help you paid for it.  The manager was replaced by someone with very little experience and very few people skills.  Either no one in the gym cared about you or at least they acted like it. The trainers are normally busy eating, talking on their phones, or looking in the mirror.  Anything but training.  I’ve seen trainers with clients for an entire hour while never taking their eyes off of their phones.  No hellos, have a nice day, or see you next time.  As they used to say, it’s a sad state of affairs.  And it’s too bad the fitness world has come to this.
